1. Peter Reaburn: Coaching Masters Athletes
Engage in thought provoking workshops lead by Peter Reaburn on the ageing swimmer.
Synopsis 1: Physiology of aging. Peter will examine the key physiological factors related to endurance, speed and power; the effects of age on these factors; and more importantly, what we as coaches and masters swimmers can do to slow these changes.
Synopsis 2: Coaching Masters Swimmers. Masters swimmers are not kids. They bring widely different motivations, experiences, physiologies, time demands and learning styles to every training session. Peter will highlight that research has shown these differences mean that masters athletes need a different coaching style to that used when coaching kids.
2. Endurance Swimming for Masters Swimmers and Coaches
- Understanding loading and training programming or “how not to break your swimmers!”
- The growth in open water swimming has been exponential and interest is at an all-time high. Coaches need to know how to train their swimmers for endurance and open water events, how far they can push them, how to structure a program and how to prepare a swimmer in a holistic manner. This presentation will cover the key elements of preparing your swimmers to achieve their endurance swimming goals.
3. Training to Race: Focus 50 and 100m
This presentation equips Masters coaches with the strategies to optimize training for 50m and 100m freestyle and other sprint events. We’ll delve into the physiological demands of these races, focusing on power development, speed endurance, and efficient technique.
The presentation will cover periodisation for sprint events, including appropriate volume and intensity distribution as well as training frequency. We’ll also explore race-specific training, such as starts, turns, and finishes, all addressing the unique needs of Masters athletes.

5. Pool Sessions: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Starts/Turns
The coaches will work through a technical learning sequence, focusing on appropriate drills to remediate common faults. The starts, turns and dives will cover tips develop your swimmers’ skills in these areas, including the use of the Backstroke start wedge.
